What Are Fibroids?

Many people have uterine fibroids and may not even know they exist. Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors or growths within the uterine wall that can range from tiny to over six inches in diameter. These growths occur when cells multiply and create an unnecessary mass that can be in the uterine wall, cavity or outside of the uterus. The cause of fibroids is unknown, but there are links to hormone production, as fibroids contain more estrogen and progesterone receptors than other cells in the uterus.

A person can have one or many fibroids, and the condition may or may not have symptoms. For many people, uterine fibroids can cause pain and discomfort, impacting their daily life. Some of the symptoms of uterine fibroids include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Periods that last longer than a week
  • Pelvic and back pain
  • Frequent urge to urinate

In some cases, fibroids may become worse or larger during pregnancy and shrink after childbirth – they can also impact pregnancy by causing certain complications.

Non-Surgical, Minimally Invasive Fibroids Embolization

There was a time when fibroid treatment could require invasive surgery, even a hysterectomy. At Fibroids MD, we offer non-surgical, minimally invasive fibroids embolization in our pristine outpatient facilities. Uterine fibroid embolization, or UFE, is an FDA-approved fibroid treatment recommended as the first-line solution by the American College of Gynecology. The procedure is completed as an outpatient treatment with no surgery or hospital stay required.

UFE only requires about half an hour to perform. Patients receive conscious sedation and local anesthetic to ensure they are relaxed and comfortable. A tiny incision is made near the groin to access the femoral artery, and a catheter is placed in the artery to travel up to the uterine arteries. UFE involves injecting embolic agents into the uterine arteries feeding the fibroids, cutting off their blood flow allowing them to shrink and disappear.

Once UFE is performed, patients can return home the same day and rest as part of their recovery. Over the following weeks and months, symptoms caused by the uterine fibroids should lessen, with reduced pain and discomfort. UFE does not impact fertility, so patients can still conceive and begin a family after treatment. Our patients at Fibroids MD report incredible relief from their fibroid symptoms after having our non-surgical UFE fibroid treatment.

If you are living with the symptoms of fibroids and live in Brooklyn, fibroid treatment is available at Fibroids MD. To learn more about UFE and whether it is right for you, contact our medical team to schedule a consultation at our New York clinic.
